8/14/2023 0 Comments White noise for deep sleep soundsBut a smarter way to mask noise is to choose the color with higher intensity in the frequencies matching that of the noise you’re trying to block, explained sound engineer Stéphane Pigeon. The white, pink, and brown noises you tend to find in sound generators can all mask annoying sounds to varying degrees, if you turn the volume up enough. To understand how noises mask each other, we spent hours talking on the phone and emailing with Stéphane Pigeon, PhD, a sound engineer specializing in white noise and the creator of myNoise, our favorite white noise app. (ASTI), the maker of two of our picks, the LectroFan EVO and the Sound+Sleep. ![]() We also interviewed UPenn scientist Mathias Basner, MD, PhD, a professor of sleep and chronobiology in the department of psychiatry who co-authored a clinical review of studies on the use of white noise as a sleep aid, as well as Stanford University sleep researcher Rafael Pelayo, MD, author of How to Sleep: The New Science-Based Solutions for Sleeping Through the Night and a medical consultant to Adaptive Sound Technologies Inc. To learn what features to look for in white noise machines, we spoke with Michael Perlis, PhD, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine whose work includes studying the use of white noise machines in treating insomnia. We also have guidance on using a white noise machine for a baby. These machines can also drown out distracting sounds during the day to help you focus. White noise machines generate sounds to mask the assorted yapping dogs, clanky radiators, and late-night parties that can leave us anxious, seething, and awake. ThredUP is not without competition in the growing resale business. Despite the impacts of the global pandemic last year, the ecommerce startup still reported 20% growth from March through May in 2020, down from the 43% demonstrated earlier in the year. Secondhand Fashion on the RiseĪccording to an annual report jointly produced by ThredUP and GlobalData, a third-party research and analytics company, the secondhand fashion market is projected to reach $64 billion by 2024. To use the Stocks data type in Microsoft Excel, you only need an internet connection and a bit of your own data to start. Once the approved items have been processed and listed, users can set the prices (which are typically significantly cheaper than retail) for their used items on the ecommerce platform built by the resale fashion company. Otherwise, the startup business will process the shipment and either recycle items not fit for resale at no cost or return the items for a fee. If users choose to donate, ThredUP will donate $5 for each kit to a charity of choice on their behalf. Users simply gather up the items they no longer use and ship their package to the ecommerce company to either sell or donate. The startup business provides sellers with a free clean-out bag or prepaid shipping label for boxes. Users start by cleaning out their closets. ThredUP intends to extend the lifespan of clothing and accessories that would otherwise be discarded by providing a simple way to resell your old items. With a mission to reduce waste in the fashion industry, the resale ecommerce business for women’s and youth apparel was born. ThredUP was founded in 2009 by entrepreneurs James Reinhart, Oliver Lubin, Chris Homer, and Dan DeMeyere. After the registration goes into effect, the startup company will trade under the “TDUP” ticker symbol. The startup ecommerce business estimates the offering to be priced between $12 to 14 per share, so the ThredUP IPO could potentially raise up to $168 million in new capital. For 30 days, ThredUP will offer underwriters the opportunity to purchase up to another 1.8 million shares. Other managers include businesses William Blair and Wells Fargo Securities, among others. Lead book-running managers for the IPO consist of financial services companies Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Barclays. On Thursday, the startup business announced its intent to bring the company to the Nasdaq Global Select Market with its initial public offering (IPO) of 12 million shares of Class A common stock. ![]() Ecommerce startup company ThredUP seeks to combat the negative impacts of the industry with its digital marketplace for resale clothing. While it’s a shame that we won’t be hearing the iconic sounds of Ice Cap once again, it’s definitely encouraging that we’ll be getting new versions of the alternate songs from Senoue, who contributed to the original soundtracks of both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Unreleased beta versions of Sonic 3, as well as the 1997 Windows PC version of the game, used significantly different compositions in place of the tracks. This includes Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, the Multiplayer menu, the Sonic 3 Act 1 boss music, and the Staff Roll. The male love interests in Frozen and Tangled may have puffed-up chests and broad shoulders, but their proportions are at least feasible. Even if we accept animations as mere fantasy, in which every character is exaggerated for aesthetic or comic effect, the disparity between male and female figures raises issues. I couldn't understand her problem – I was simply copying what I'd seen in other drawings. In art class, I instinctively drew normal-sized men but gave the women exaggerated hourglass figures with larger breasts and tiny waists. When I was eight, I watched The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo. Photograph: Everett Collection/Rex Features But when so many girls look up to Disney's princesses as role models, surely it's time for a rethink of the animation formula. In a recent interview, Lino DiSalvo, the film's head of animation, said: "Historically speaking, animating female characters is really, really difficult, because they have to go through these range of emotions, but … you have to keep them pretty." So animated boys can get angry, muck about, and it's OK if they look silly – but girls must remain perfectly beautiful throughout? The cosmetics industry might thank him, but will parents? I'm not suggesting they ban their children from seeing the film – Frozen is one of the most entertaining family movies out this year. It's a message that seems to have been lost on Frozen's animators. A petition supported by Merida's creator, Brenda Chapman, claimed: "She was a princess who looked like a real girl, complete with the 'imperfections' that all people have … By making her skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, you are sending a message to girls that the original, realistic, teenage-appearing version of Merida is inferior." From Sleeping Beauty's Aurora to Aladdin's Jasmine, you'll see a similar look in Disney princesses past.īrave, a film released by Disney but produced by Pixar, had a heroine with more realistic proportions, but she was controversially glammed up for a Disney Princess Collection toy line. No deviation from the formula is permitted. To use these big doe eyes as standard in supposedly realistic human females reduces the characters' individuality and sends out a message: to be a princess, you must not only be brave but have a specific, unattainable brand of beauty. But in human females, they're also an animator's shorthand for attractiveness – and a major feature of adult anime, hentai. We all know that big eyes are cute – just look at Puss in Boots. The snag is, both Elsa and Anna have the kind of proportions that would make Barbie look chunky: tiny nipped-in waists, no hips, long legs, skinny arms, pert breasts, small feet and eyes three times the size of the male characters'. Even the silly snowman sidekick is funny. ![]() ![]() Sure, there are men along the way, but they're not the prize: this is about female bonding, self-awareness, independence. ![]() Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen, it sees the fearless Princess Anna travel the kingdom to find her misunderstood sister Elsa, who has fled after accidentally plunging the land into an icy winter with her magic powers. With two strong sisters at the centre of the story, Disney's new animation Frozen seems like a winner for women. 8/13/2023 0 Comments One handed key boardSwipe-style keyboards and this option seems like an obvious choice for a keyboard like Thumbly being able to type with one hand while keeping your thumb planted on the screen would be a big help, especially when wielding a huge device like the iPhone 6 Plus.
